Two centres

Two centres, not three. The nights decide the pairing, and the transfer day is the price.

Most people who ask for a safari and a beach are asking for two trips in one. That works, at the right nights, and it goes wrong in the same three ways every time. This page puts the five pairs that work next to the nights each one needs, with the top band already published on each destination's own page, and then names the day you spend moving. That day is real, it comes out of the holiday, and almost nobody counts it before they book.

The pairs that work, and the nights they need

Each pair below is two of the six trips on this site, in the order we would run them. The bands are the top band from each destination's own page, per person sharing, and the last column is the two added together.

One add-on sits outside the six. Two nights at Victoria Falls goes in front of a Kruger safari or behind it, and it is the pairing we are asked for most after the two South African ones. That page carries the park fees and the river flow readings rather than a band, and it says why.

Five pairs, the nights each one takes, and the published bands behind it
Nights The pair Why this one works Top published bands
Eight Cape Town five, then Kruger three City and wine first, then three nights of drives. Both ends are domestic, so the move is one hop or a connection through Johannesburg R 24,000 + R 31,900 = R 55,900 pp
Ten Kruger three, then Zanzibar seven Bush at the front, then the shorter of the two island flights: three hours and thirty five minutes direct from Johannesburg R 31,900 + R 34,900 = R 66,800 pp
Ten Kruger three, then Mauritius seven The same shape with the four hour flight, the two hour clock change and the all inclusive band R 31,900 + R 38,500 = R 70,400 pp
Eleven Cape Town five, then the Garden Route six The drive starts in Cape Town, so the city is the first centre and the car carries you to the second. It ends in Gqeberha R 24,000 + R 16,900 = R 40,900 pp
Twelve Cape Town five, then Zanzibar seven The widest contrast of the five: mountain and wine, then a town with a history and a beach in the same week R 24,000 + R 34,900 = R 58,900 pp

Every band above is the top band already published on that destination's own page, per person sharing, and all six of those bands include the return flights from Johannesburg. They are indicative planning ranges until Lizanne confirms the live price and availability in writing, and the sum of two bands is a planning figure, never a quote.

The transfer day is the third cost

A pair is not two trips bought together. It is two trips with a day taken out of the middle, and that day is the thing people forget to count.

What the move actually costs

You leave the lodge after the morning drive, or you leave the city for the airport at breakfast. Either way the middle of the day goes on the road, the terminal and the transfer, and you arrive at the second centre in the afternoon with nothing planned on purpose.

So an eight night pair gives you seven holiday days and one moving day, not nine of anything. Count the nights, then count the moves, and keep one move in the trip if you want it to feel like a holiday rather than a tour.

The second centre, cut too short

The shapes on this site are not arbitrary. The bush needs three nights because the drives run twice a day and the middle of the day is off. The island needs seven because a week is one resort and one long day off it, and anything shorter and the flight eats the trip.

A pair that leaves five nights for the island is a worse island trip than the seven night one, and it still cost you the flight. If you have ten nights, the pair is bush and island. It is not island and island.

Why the bush goes first

The safari vehicle leaves before the sun is useful, so the early starts are the shape of the trip. Do them at the front while you are fresh and still on South African time, then end on the beach, where the slowest days sit at the end and the flight home leaves you rested rather than ruined.

The reverse works when the wildlife is the whole reason for the trip and you want it as the finale. Say so and it can be built that way, but know which one you are choosing.

Where the two bands meet

All six bands include the return flights from Johannesburg, and on a pair you still fly to the bush and you still fly to the island. Both sets of flights get used, so the sum is closer to the truth than people expect rather than double counting the air.

Three things the sum does not hold: a night at Johannesburg when the connection will not close in one day, the domestic flight home from Gqeberha on the Garden Route pair, and the difference between a stand alone week priced on its own and a combined booking. That is a question for the trade, not a guess for a web page.

Three ways a pair goes wrong

What to catch before it becomes a booking
What goes wrong What it looks like The fix
Three centres Bush, city and island in twelve nights, with a move every third day Drop one. Two centres and one move is the shape that still feels like a holiday
The transfer counted as a holiday day A beach day that is actually a flight, a terminal and a transfer, arriving after lunch Take one night off the second centre or add one to the trip, and never plan an activity on the move
Two bands treated as a quote R 66,800 quoted to a partner as if it were the price of the trip Treat the sum as a planning figure and let Lizanne confirm the live price in writing

If you are still deciding between the individual trips rather than how to pair them, the choosing guide starts with the nights you actually have and rules destinations in and out from there. The flight time, the clock change and the transfer at each end are on getting there, and the second of the pair is usually decided by which of those three you can live with.

What to put in the brief

Send these six lines

  • The nights you can take, not the nights you would like.
  • The month, or the two months you are choosing between.
  • The two centres you have in mind, in the order you would run them.
  • Who is travelling, and the age of the youngest and the oldest.
  • Whether one move is fine or you would rather stay in one place.
  • A ceiling you will not cross, if you have one.

What comes back, and when

A plan with the two centres, the nights at each, the move between them and the band for the pair. That arrives the same day. The live price and availability follow once Lizanne has confirmed them with the trade, in writing.

If the nights do not carry two centres, or the pairs that fit are wrong for the month, that is what you will hear, with the closest single centre next to it. A plan that never becomes a booking costs you nothing.

Tell us the nights and the two centres.

Two lines are enough to start. If the pair does not fit the nights, you will hear that first.
