Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls, the two nights that go in front of a Kruger trip.

The falls are 1,708 metres wide and 108 metres high, which makes them the largest single sheet of falling water in the world. The direct flight from Johannesburg takes about one hour forty five minutes over roughly 930 kilometres, and Zimbabwe keeps the same clock as South Africa, so no part of the trip is spent adjusting to a time change. A South African passport holder enters Zimbabwe without a visa. This page is the seventh destination in the menu and the last one we built, because it is the one that works as two nights in front of a Kruger booking rather than as a holiday on its own. Every fee below is published and current. Every flow figure is read from the authority that measures the river. The package price is not printed here, and the page says why.

Two nights, and what each one is for.

The flights from Johannesburg land in the late morning, which means the first day still gives you an afternoon. That afternoon is the only reason one night ever looks tempting, and it does not survive the maths: a single night means you pay the airport transfer and the hotel night for one half day of the falls, and you leave before the light gets good. Two nights give you one full day. Three nights are for people adding the Zambia side or driving south to Hwange, and the shape below is written for two.

  1. Day 1

Land, drop the bags, and walk the rainforest while the light is still low.

Victoria Falls Airport sits about 20 kilometres outside the town, and the transfer takes roughly twenty minutes on the A8. There is no public transport on that road, so the transfer is a car you arrange rather than a bus you find. Land at midday and you are checked in before two.

The rainforest walk starts from the main gate in the town itself. The path runs along the lip of the gorge through the spray, with viewpoints numbered from one to sixteen, and it takes two to three hours at an honest pace in the heat. Walk it on the first afternoon rather than the next morning. The light is lower, the coach parties have gone, and you have the second day free for the river instead of queuing at the gate again. The entry ticket is single entry, so a second walk means a second fee.

  2. Day 2

The full day: the river in the morning, the bridge in the afternoon.

A sunrise cruise or a canoe on the Zambezi above the falls is the morning that most people remember, because the river above the drop is wide, slow and full of hippo and birdlife, and it looks nothing like the chasm it becomes a few kilometres downstream. The alternative is a game drive in the Zambezi National Park, which starts at the edge of the town and holds elephant, buffalo, giraffe and a long list of antelope without the four hour drive to a bigger park.

The afternoon belongs to the Victoria Falls Bridge. It is 198 metres long, carries the road, the railway and a footway, and its deck sits 128 metres above the river in the gorge. It was completed in 1905 and it is still the only rail link between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Walk out onto it for the view back at the falls, or book the bungee jump off the middle if that is the reason you came. Dinner in the town is small and early, and there is no reason to book anything else.

  3. Day 3, the flight home

A morning at the craft market, then the short hop back to Johannesburg.

The return flights leave around midday, so the morning is free and unhurried. The craft market beside the rainforest gate is the place for the wood and the stonework, and the vendors take United States dollars in small notes. Allow the full twenty minutes back to the airport and two hours at the airport itself, because the check-in hall is smaller than the traffic it handles in peak season.

The water decides what you will actually see.

This is the part that most booking pages leave out. The falls are not the same waterfall in April and November, and the difference is measured, not described. The Zambezi River Authority publishes daily flow readings at the Nana's Farm station above the falls. The long-term mean flow there is 1,100 cubic metres per second. The highest flow ever recorded was 10,000 cubic metres per second in March 1958. In the dry months the river falls to between 100 and 300 cubic metres per second, and the reading on 26 October 2026 was 296.

What the same two nights look like at different points in the water year. Flow figures from the Zambezi River Authority station at Victoria Falls, read 2026-11-01.
Window What the river is doing What you get
March and April Peak flow, often several thousand cubic metres per second, and the spray rises hundreds of metres The spectacle and the noise. The rainforest walk is a soaking. Much of the face is hidden in spray, so the photographs are of white cloud rather than rock.
May and June Falling from the peak, still strong The best balance. Spray in the air, the full width visible from most viewpoints, and the light is clean.
July to September Steady and low, clear water The whole face in view and the gorge readable. Cool mornings, dry days, and the peak South African school holiday traffic in July.
October and November The low point, 100 to 300 cubic metres per second The rock face and the full height of the chasm, with thin curtains of water. The Zambia side opens up, and so does Devil's Pool. The heat is at its worst before the rains break.

The rains run from about November to March and the river peaks after them, which is why the high water arrives in autumn rather than in summer. A dry year does not move the calendar, it moves the volume: the low-water months stay low, on the authority's own long record. If your dates are fixed and you want the falls at their fullest, say so and we will tell you plainly if your month does not deliver it.

What you pay at the gate.

These are the published park and entry numbers, not estimates. The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority sets them in United States dollars, and its 2026 tariff added value added tax, which is why the international fee moved from 50 to 58 dollars. South African visitors pay the SADC rate. Every fee is per person, per entry, and a ticket does not allow re-entry on the same day.

Victoria Falls National Park, Rainforest main gate, 2026 tariff in United States dollars, value added tax included.
Who is paying Day entry Lunar rainbow viewing
South African and SADC visitors US$ 35 US$ 81
International visitors from outside SADC US$ 58 US$ 116
Zimbabwean residents US$ 7 US$ 15

Children between six and twelve pay half, and children under six enter free. Pay in United States dollars in small notes, because the card machines at the gate fail often enough that the queue is the wrong place to find out. The Zambia side is a separate park with a separate fee, 20 dollars for international visitors at the Mosi-oa-Tunya gate. A KAZA univisa costs 50 dollars, lasts 30 days, and covers Zimbabwe, Zambia and day trips into Botswana, and it can be bought on arrival at Victoria Falls airport. A South African passport needs no visa for Zimbabwe itself, which is why the univisa only makes sense if you are crossing to Livingstone.

Why there is no price band on this page.

Every other destination page carries indicative bands, because we hold the trade's published shoulder-season pricing for those places and we can build a range from it. We do not hold that for Victoria Falls yet. The honest options are to invent a range or to leave the field empty, and an invented range becomes a quote in someone's head. So the add-on price comes back with your Kruger quote, worked from live availability for your dates.

What we can tell you now is the order of the costs. The flight is the largest single line. The two hotel nights are the second. The park fees above are small against both, and the activities, the helicopter, the rafting, the bungee and the sunset cruise, are each priced at the gate and each optional. Ask for the breakdown and you will get it in writing before anything is held.

Where the two nights sit against the bush.

The falls go in front of the safari or behind it, never in the middle, because the middle is where the transfer days pile up. The house order is bush first. Three nights in the Kruger private reserves, a night in Johannesburg if the connections do not line up, then the short hop to Victoria Falls for two nights and the flight home from there.

Read the Kruger page for the safari shape, and two centres in one trip for the nights each pairing needs and the transfer day that comes with it. If you are building the trip from scratch, getting there puts the flight and the transfer next to the other destinations, and how it works is the three steps from brief to confirmed booking.

One limit worth naming. The town side of the falls is not a safari. The Zambezi National Park on the doorstep is real and worth a morning, but the big herds are in Hwange, which sits south of the falls and needs its own two nights and its own road transfer. If the wildlife is the point of the trip, book the Kruger or Hwange proper and treat the falls as the two quiet days at the end.

How this page stays honest.

  • Published fees, dated.

The park fees are the 2026 ZimParks tariff and the flow readings come from the Zambezi River Authority. Both are named on the page so you can check them yourself.

  • No band where we hold no data.

This page prints no package price. The trade pricing for this add-on is not in our hands yet, and a made-up range would be worse than an empty field.

  • Verified before it is offered.

No flight, hotel or activity reaches you as fact until availability and the live rate have been checked. Anything unchecked is labelled an example.

  • One person at the end.
