Family trips

Family trips, planned around the children.

A trip with children is not the same trip with two extra seats. The room, the flight time, the number of stops and the pace of the day all change once a five-year-old is on the booking. This page sets out what changes, which of the six destinations fits which age, and what the family package actually adds. Planning stays free.

Four things decide whether a family trip works. We settle all four before anyone looks at a price, because a plan that ignores them comes apart on the second morning.

Where everyone sleeps

A family room and two rooms are different products at different prices. Connecting rooms are requested, never promised. A room sold as sleeping four may mean two beds and a sleeper couch.

We ask how many beds you actually need, and whether the youngest can share. It changes the property list before it changes the price.

When the flights move

School holidays are the busiest weeks of the South African travel calendar, and fares move first. A flight that leaves at 06:00 is cheaper than the 10:00 for a reason, and that reason is a 03:30 wake-up with a child in the car.

We show you both and let you pick. We do not quietly book the cheaper one.

How much day fits

One anchor activity a day is the rule that survives contact with a real family. A beach week absorbs a slow morning. A four-night city break does not.

If the children are young, we slow the itinerary down and cut a stop rather than stretch a day to fit it.

Food and the routine

Half board at 19:30 is not a family meal when the little one eats at 17:30. Self catering buys you the routine back, at the cost of a kitchen and a shop on day one.

We ask which one you want before the property is chosen, not after you arrive.

Which of the six suits which age

Six destinations are on the site. They are not interchangeable once children are travelling. This is the honest split, including the parts that need planning around.

The six destinations, read by the age of the youngest traveller
Destination Works best for The days look like Plan around
Cape Town and the Winelands Any age A base, short drives, a beach day, one mountain day Weather turns fast. Keep one indoor day spare
Kruger School age and up Early starts, two drives a day, long quiet afternoons Lodges set their own minimum age for shared game drives. It is checked before quoting
Garden Route Any age A drive with a stop every day, self catering most nights One night stands are tiring. Two nights minimum per stop
Mauritius Under ten One flight, one hotel, a beach and a pool School-holiday weeks carry the highest surcharge of the six
Zanzibar School age and up Slow beach days, one spice or stone town morning Tide changes the beach through the day. Check it against nap time
Dubai School age and up Short break, indoor attractions, early nights Summer heat rules out the outdoor days. It is a winter and shoulder-season trip

Prices are indicative planning ranges until Lizanne confirms the live price and availability in writing. The destination pages carry the night-by-night shape and the cost bands for each.

What the family booking adds

Captain's Circle is the family tier: First for every traveller in the booking, with the children's inclusions at no charge. It is the package built for four, not a couple's package stretched.

Children's inclusions free

First-level treatment for the adults and the children in the same booking. The children are not priced as small adults.

An arrival basket sized four

The family basket carries the couple set plus two children's activity packs, a family multi-plug and a first-aid mini kit. It arrives with you, not at the hotel desk.

Concierge at both ends

Where the airport provides it. That is the honest limit: a smaller arrival airport may not have the service, and we say so before you book.

Visa admin support

The paperwork for a family is more than the paperwork for one traveller, and it is the part that sinks a booking at the last minute. We run the checklist with you.

Captain's Circle sell price is R 5,999 per booking, alongside Economy, Business and First. The full inclusion list sits on the packages page.

What to put in the brief

Send these six lines

  • Where you want to go, or the two you are choosing between.
  • The dates, or the week you are working around.
  • The ages of the children at the time of travel, not now.
  • How many beds you need, and whether the youngest shares.
  • Anything that changes a day: allergies, a nap that still matters, a child who does not do boats.
  • Whether you want self catering or half board.

What we check before you commit

Border rules for children travelling with one parent, or with someone who is not a parent, are specific and they change. The requirement is checked for your route before you commit, not at the airport.

Passport validity for every traveller is checked on the same pass, because a child's passport expires without anyone noticing.

Nothing on this page is a quote. The live price and availability come from the trade, and Lizanne confirms them with you in writing before anything is charged.

Start with the ages and the dates.

Two lines are enough to start. The rest we ask as we go. There is no form to finish and nothing to pay to plan.

Plan the family trip on WhatsApp

  • Free to the traveller.

The planning lane costs you nothing. A plan that never becomes a booking costs nothing either.

  • One named human.

Lizanne van Niekerk plans it and books it. She is the person you message on the day of travel.

  • Indicative until confirmed.

Every number before the booking is a planning range. The binding price is confirmed in writing.

Read how it works for the three steps, or the school windows dated before you pick the week. If two families are travelling together, the groups page prices the party.
