Gulf, United Arab Emirates
Dubai short break, the four-night shape.
Four nights is the right length for a first Dubai, because the city is a set of separate places rather than one, and each one takes half a day to do properly. The direct flight from Johannesburg runs about eight hours over roughly 6 400 kilometres. Dubai is two hours ahead of South Africa and neither country shifts its clocks, so the difference never changes and there is no jet lag to speak of: you lose the morning on the way out and get it back on the way home. Every number on this page is a planning band, not a quote. The live package comes back from the trade, and Lizanne confirms it before you commit.
Day by day.
One hotel for all four nights, in Downtown or on the Marina side, because moving hotels in a city this size costs a half day every time. The shape runs old, then tall, then sand, then water, and it is built so that the two hottest afternoons are the two spent indoors or in a car with air conditioning. The driving is limited to the desert run and the airport.

Day 1
Land, check in, and walk the creek instead of the mall.
Dubai International sits about five kilometres east of the city centre, so the transfer is short whatever time you land. The night flight out of Johannesburg arrives in the morning, which leaves the afternoon free and is the reason this shape works: you are in a room by midday and out again by two.
Spend the first afternoon in Al Fahidi, the old neighbourhood on the Bur Dubai side of the creek, where the wind-tower houses from the 1890s stand in narrow lanes with a cultural centre or two inside them. Then walk to the abra station and cross the creek on a wooden boat for a few dirhams, which is the cheapest and best thing in the city, and land in Deira. The Spice Souk and the Gold Souk are both a short walk from the Deira landing, and the gold windows are the part people photograph. Eat early. You have been awake for a long time.

Day 2
The tall half: Downtown, the Burj, and the fountain after dark.
Book the Burj Khalifa for the late afternoon rather than the morning, and book it before you fly, because the sunset slots go first. The building is 828 metres and 163 storeys. At The Top covers levels 124 and 125 at 452 and 456 metres, and At The Top SKY takes you to level 148 at 555 metres with a guided element and refreshments. The lower deck is plenty for a first visit and the difference in price is real.
The Dubai Mall sits at the foot of the tower, which makes the day one continuous move rather than two. The aquarium wall and the ice rink are both inside it, and the fountain sits on the lake outside, running on a half-hour schedule through the evening. Watch one show from the mall steps and a second from the bridge further along, then eat in Downtown. The metro Red Line is driverless, air conditioned and cheap, and it joins Downtown to the Marina without a taxi, which matters on a four-night trip.
-
Day 3
The sand half: red dunes, an hour out of the city.
The red dunes at Lahbab are roughly forty five minutes to an hour from the city, and the afternoon into evening is the right window, because the light is better and the heat has broken. A dune drive, a stop at the top for the sunset, and dinner at a desert camp is the standard shape. It is a tourist day and everyone knows it, and it is still the thing first time visitors remember.
The quieter version is the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve on the Al Maha side, where the vehicles are restricted and the wildlife is the point: Arabian oryx, gazelle, and a guide who knows the difference. It costs more and it is the better day if you would rather see the desert than ride it. Say which one you want when you send the brief, because they are booked differently.
-
Day 4
The water day, or Abu Dhabi instead.
The easy fourth day is the beach: Jumeirah public beach for the skyline view, Kite Beach for the walk and the food trucks, or a day pass at one of the beachfront hotels on the Marina side. Nothing needs booking except the pass, and after three days of moving it is the day that makes the trip feel like a holiday.
The other choice is Abu Dhabi, and it is a full day rather than a half one. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is about 129 kilometres from Downtown, an hour and twenty five minutes without traffic, and the Louvre Abu Dhabi sits on Saadiyat Island a short drive further. The mosque is free and open to visitors outside prayer times, with a dress code that is enforced: shoulders, arms and legs covered, and a headscarf for women, with abayas lent at the entrance. The Louvre is ticketed and worth two hours. Leave by eight in the morning and you are back in Dubai before the evening peak.
-
Day 5, the flight home
A morning swim, then eight hours back.
The Emirates day flight leaves Dubai in the morning and lands in Johannesburg in the mid afternoon, which gets you home the same day and is worth having on a short break. Pack the night before. The airport is close and the check-in queues are not, so three hours before departure is the honest allowance at Dubai International in peak season.

The add-on
Two more nights, the mountains, or a second city.
The cheapest extension is two more nights, which turns the trip into a six night break and gives you a second beach day without touching the flight cost. The second option is Hatta, an hour and a half east into the mountains, where the dam, the kayaks and the hiking trails are a different country from the towers and can be done as a long day or an overnight.
The third option is to treat Dubai as a stop rather than a destination: two nights here, then a short flight onward. The Zanzibar page is the beach week that pairs with it, and the Mauritius page is the resort version if you would rather not change city twice.
On weather: October to April is the window, and October itself is still hot at an average high around 36 degrees, so it is a good month for the beach and a hard one for walking at midday. June to September runs above 40 degrees with humidity and is the part of the year we steer travellers away from. Ramadan moves eleven days earlier each year and changes opening hours and the rhythm of the day while it runs. Entry rules, the visa position for your passport and the alcohol rules are checked at booking, because they change and because getting them wrong is a problem at the airport rather than at the hotel.
Indicative planning bands.
| Shape | Basis | Nights | Indicative band |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four-star, Deira or Bur Dubai | Return flights from Johannesburg, four nights, airport transfers, breakfast daily, the creek and souk day, and the metro rather than a car | 4 | from R 14,200 pp |
| Four-star, Downtown | Return flights from Johannesburg, four nights in Downtown, airport transfers, breakfast daily, At The Top levels 124 and 125, and the Lahbab desert afternoon with dinner | 4 | from R 17,900 pp |
| Five-star, Marina or beachfront | Return flights from Johannesburg, four nights on the water side, private transfers, breakfast daily, a beach club day pass, At The Top SKY on level 148, and the conservation reserve desert day | 4 | from R 24,600 pp |
Includes the return flight from Johannesburg, both airport transfers, the four nights with the meal plan stated, and the entries named in the row. Excludes travel insurance, entry and visa costs, lunches and dinners where bed and breakfast applies, drinks, the Abu Dhabi day, spa treatments, gratuities and anything taken off the hotel bill. A child sharing with two adults is quoted separately. South African school holidays, December, and the weeks around the Dubai shopping season run well above these bands, and Lizanne flags the difference in the indicative options before you choose anything.
How this page stays honest.
-
Bands, not quotes.
Every number here is a planning range. Nothing on this page is a live rate and nothing here is bookable on its own.
-
Verified before it is offered.
No hotel and no flight reaches you as fact until availability, rate and season have been checked live. Anything unchecked is labelled an example, subject to live confirmation.
-
Real places only.
Al Fahidi, the creek, the Spice Souk, the Gold Souk, the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall, Lahbab, the conservation reserve, Hatta, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Louvre Abu Dhabi are real, named places. No invented hotel is added to this page.
